Cartogram


A cartogram is a diagram or a distorted visual representation of the area of land. The values are what create the distortion within the areas within the mapped region.
The example map shows the distortion within the Unites States of the constituents of the House of Representatives of forty-eight states (excluding Hawaii, Alaska and U.S. territories).

Flow Map

A flow map uses lines of various substantial widths to show the flow of the data being represented. In addition, flow maps can be used to show the pattern of relationships.
The example map shows the migration pattern within California within the United States, during 1995-2000.

Isoline Map


An Isoline map represents the data by connecting points of the same value of data with a continuous line. Some Isoline maps are used to aid in the data from thematic maps. In addition, the most common types of isoline maps represent weather or various land elevation.
The example map shows an example isoline map for the topography of an area of land near a body of water.

Proportional Circle Map


The information represented in the proportional map information is generally represented with circles. These circles are relative in size to the data which they represent.
The example map shows the population of the Native Americans, during 1990, within the southwest United States.

Choropleth Map


A choropleth map uses shaded colored areas and various colors to represent a value within a predefined range. Choropleth maps can be used to show population density or the usages of various land areas.

The example map shows how many college basketball players are located per capita in the United States during 1958 until 1960.

Dot Distribution Map



A dot distribution map generally uses dots or circles to represent an amount, value of a specific area. These maps are scaled to reflect the amount of the data, which is represented within the map. In addition, the individual dots are located on the map in accordance of the data being mapped. While creating the map, the cartographer needs to take into consideration the size of the area being mapped and the scale in relation to the value of the various dots.

The map example “reflects the relative abundance of this Karayevia suchlandtii in the western EMAP study. Relative abundance is a measure of the proportion of cells of this species based on a "fixed count" of 300 total diatom cells counted and identified.” This information is per the EPA.

Propaganda Map



Propaganda maps are also known as cartographic propaganda maps are created with the goal of persuading the viewer to believe a specific way. The maps use images, scale and design to accomplish the manipulation of the viewer.

The example propaganda map is from World War II, this shows what the German Government wanted to portray to their people: the whole world was out to get them.
